  18. <p>     A bird called the blackcap has been showing up in Britain
  19. lately, in droves. Seems these birds of the forest, which used
  20. to winter in the western Mediterranean, have changed their
  21. migratory routes. German researchers studied some blackcaps and
  22. their offspring, and report in Nature that the change is
  23. genetic; responding to some environmental signal, the birds'
  24. hard-wired migratory instructions have evolved in an
  25. astonishingly short 30 years.

  27. <p>     FOREVER YOUNG
  28. </p>
  29. <p>     Fruit flies are the mules, if you will, of genetic research;
  30. they breed fast, and their simple chromosomes are ideal for the
  31. study of heredity. Now a group of U.S. biologists has found a
  32. way to freeze living fly embryos. Not only does that guarantee a
  33. stable fly supply, but it is a landmark achievement in another
  34. sense: fruit flies are the most complex organisms ever to be lab
  35. frozen and revived. The technique could lead, albeit far down
  36. the road, to the freezing of mammals--even humans, maybe.
